“Muscogee County has a higher income inequality rate than the state average; with 33% of children growing up in poverty. Black households make an average of $31,900 while white households make $56,300.” (City-data.com, 2022) Workforce development and educational training in Columbus has suffered due to the lack of sufficient resources available. Most of the resources for this community come from various organizations that lack the capacity to provide the full services. Individuals must go to different organizations to meet their complete needs, and with there already being an issue with a limited transit system, some individuals are unable to receive the full training and education they need to get into better jobs.
Our ulterior objective is to develop more community partnerships that will make our organization the most resourceful Community Development Corporation in the Columbus, GA area. To help decrease the recidivism rate in this community, the Muscogee County Prison and Jail are our main resources for finding inmates who need our assistance. Our plan is to start with inmates at least 30 to 90 days pre-release to prepare them for adjusting back into the community. This allows us to develop a plan to assist them with immediate needs. Constituents will receive eight weeks of job readiness and social and personal adjustment training, two weeks of resume writing and mock interview assistance, and six months of onsite job visits to evaluate their performance and ensure they are sustaining. Constituents will have access to our full resources during this period. If a constituent is not successful in a position, they will reenter the program to determine the issues and assistance with replacement at another business. Our main goal is to help the constituents maintain long-term employment and be able to provide a productive life, so they do not return to prison.

Our community partnerships allow us to provide all the resources necessary to meet the needs of current and future businesses. We also develop relationships with businesses to provide paid job opportunities and/or unpaid job training. Unpaid job training is for individuals who have never had a job and need some experience, or who have not worked in a long period of time. To eliminate stress and liability on the company, we provide a job coach from our organization that stays with them during their work schedule. Job training is typically from one to three weeks, to give the company a chance to observe their work ethic for possible job opportunities.

Our program’s goal is to conduct monthly jobsite checkups for the first 90 days of hire to ensure the constituent is staying on track and able to sustain a productive living environment.
